Chinese Auction!

Jul 03, 2008

We plan to have a Chinese Auction (You buy tickets, put it in a bag, we'll pick one when it is all over).  Tickets will be one for one dollar, five for three dollars, and ten for five dollars.  We have a bunch of donations, as you can see listed below, in the "Sponsorship Updated" blog post.

We will be taking pictures when we receive all donations, or enough for several baskets, and will post them on here and include underneath each picture what is in each basket.

You will be able to buy tickets online.  Here is how it is going to work:

  • Each basket will have a certain name or number.
  • You email me (Chelsea). My email is dlg159@hotmail.com telling me what basket you are interested in and how many tickets you would like to buy.  You can buy as many tickets for whatever baskets you like.  However, you will have to make sure you let me know what basket, and how many tickets for that basket.
  • Then, you will have to send me the money.  You will not have your tickets placed in the appropriate baskets until I receive your money.  You can email me for where to send the money.  Again, my email is dlg159@hotmail.com
  • You will send the money in the mail, the same way you would send a normal letter, with a stamp and a return address so that I know what name to write down on the tickets.
  • I will send you a confirmation email letting you know that I received your money, how much money I received, what baskets I put your tickets in and how many I put in each basket.
  • Please after you receive my confirmation email, let me know if all the information is correct.
  • At some point, either in the letter or when you email me, you need to let me know your email address and your first and last name, so that I can inform you if you won.
  • I will also be posting the winners for each basket underneath the basket when the auction reaches its close.

This auction will be starting as soon as we get the pictures up.  Make sure to check back periodically because we will be added baskets throughout the auction.  We hope to have some baskets up soon, so check back regularly

I will have these baskets at each of my events, where you can also buy tickets.  We have multiple blog posts about our events, that we will be adding information to as we get it.

That's all for now.  Until next time,

Making A Diffrence

Jul 02, 2008

Great news! We have already managed to get 75 families to commit to saving energy! Each family is doing this by making sure they turn off their computer at night, unplugging cell phone chargers when they're not in use, switching at least 15 light bulbs in their house for more efficient ones, and making sure their lights are turned off when they aren't using them! It's great news! We can't wait to tell you about more families that are making and environmental switch!

75 families who turn off their lights for one more hour a day for a year will save: 73,912.5 lbs. of carbon

75 families switching out 15 light bulbs for CFL's will save: 2,628.6 lbs.

75 families unplugging chargers, etc. at night for a year will save: 4,629.6 lbs.

75 families turning off computers at night for the next year will save: 1,549.702

SO FAR WE'VE SAVED:

82,720.402 LBS OF CARBON!

Just A Quick Update

Jun 28, 2008

We are finally out of school, so our plans are now being put into full action!  We finished the magnets, the posters, the brochure, and the pledge!  We plan to pass these out in our community to raise awareness!  We are still receiving donations, so as of now, everything is going great!

More updates very soon!

Until next time,

More Progress

Jun 26, 2008

Just yesterday we received our package full polar bear things. We got our t-shirts, information on polar bears, and polar bear international pins. We plan on decorating our shirts very soon, and we will be wearing them to our Bowl-A-Thon, and we will also wear them when we go to the elementry school and to any other event that we hold.

We also began work on designing posters that we wil post around local businesses to raise awrness for the polar bear. We also plan on passing out these posters and  brochures on 100% recycled paper. This way our imact on the enviornment is reduced.

Along with posters, we are going to create brochures, a pledge, and magnets to distribute around our local neighborhood. This way our local community becomes aware of our project, and our quest to save energy in a big way. We are going to begin making the pledge today, and hopefully it will be ready by the end of this week.

We have also made plans to present to the school board an informitive speech on why our school should start a recycling program, and why our school should buy strictly recycled paper.

That's all for now. We will post more soon! Stay green everyone!

Upcoming Events

Jun 23, 2008

Hey Everyone,

It's Adam from the PA Green Team again just giving you an update on our project. A lot has happened lately that needs to be addresed. One thing that is happening with our project is that support of sponsors. Thanks to generous sponsorships from various companies, including the Pittsburgh Zoo and PPG Aquarium, Starbucks Coffee, Polarbears International, and the Supinka Family, we are officially ready to start making big plans for the summer.

Over the summer we would like to have a fundraising Bowl-A-Thon. What we would like to do is rent some bowling lanes, and invite people to come and bowl for the awareness of polar bear extinction. Throughout the night auctions will be held giving away prizes such zoo passes and Starbucks. The whole time we will be educating others and explaining ways that people can help polar bears at home.

That's the big update right now. We are really excited to get this event off the ground. It should be happening sooner than later.

Another event that we are planning on doing is going to the Pittsburgh PPG Zoo and Aquarium, and we will be setting up a booth with pampllets and brochures that talk about saving energy, and how much danger the polar bear is in. I have been working hard to get into contact with the right people, and right now things are looking up. We're really excited to be seeing our project move along!

Story Time Updated

Jun 18, 2008

Hey Everyone,

It's Adam from the PA Green Team. I'm just giving an update on where we are, and where we are going.

Recently, we have just completed writing our first story that we will be presenting to the grade schoolers. Our plan is to, when all is said and done, to have two stories written by the end of our project. We plan on writing on stories on "elephant poop" paper with illustrations. ( Elephant poop paper is organic paper made from... You guessed it... Elephant poop.) Throughout the course of this project we plan on trying to use the most amount of recycled materials that we can. Going back to the story, I decided to write the first story about how polar bears were overhunted, and endangered not long ago, but were able to bounce back. Eventhough the bears have bounced back they are now in grave danger of extinction yet again due to global warming. At the end of the book, the children learn ways that they too can help stop global warming. The overall goal is to educatate so the younger students are able to make a diffrence at home.

The second story has been written! This story is much more light hearted! In fact, the polar bears go to school, and there they learn about global warming, and all about the ozone layer. They also learn what they can do to help the enviornment. All the bearns in the story are named after cties in Alaska, which I thought was clever! Well that's the update for now!

Until next time,

Adam (PA Green Team)

Recent Steps To Success

Jun 05, 2008

We have made great progress thus far with our project. We have contacted The Pittsburgh Zoo and PPG Aquarium about us renovating their parking lot. We have also started to set up when we can go visit the elementary schools to inform the younger students about both recycling and global warming's affect on our planet and the polar bears. We are beginning to outline lesson plans for the younger children. We plan on creating books using recycled materials for grades one and two, and providing skits for the older grades. We will have a different book for each first and second grade and a different skit for each third and fourth grade. The older kids will obviously be more involved. We also plan on bringing an effective recycling program to local elementary schools that we are so fortunate to have here in our high school. Details are not all worked out yet, but we will be updating with more information soon. We have decided on giving each class that we visit some flowers for them to plant in flower pots themselves. Then, after several weeks, we plan on revisiting these classes and check on their progress along with providing them with more information. In the long run, the groups that have kept their flower alive, will choose a candidate to take home their flower, and planting it in their yard. This way we are enforcing the importance of how much "green" we need both inside and outside of the school setting. Everything is going smoothy thus far. As of now, our only problem that we have encountered is that of finding a CO2 calculator online. As you can tell, this is not much of a problem, and will be solved rather quickly with more research. That is it for now, until next time,

Sincerely,

The PA Green Team
